With Rainbow I had it all my way, totally 100 per cent, but now Ian Gillan, who is definitely not a normal person, ha!, will come up with the melodies and lyrics to things I've written which I would never have thought of. That's part of the chemistry and magic of Purple. Nobody has a voice like Ian Gillan's and you can't say that about the Journeys [Uh-oh, Ritchie... bad example!) Foreigners, Survivors or Rainbows...

The success of Gillan the band didn’t escape the notice of Ritchie Blackmore. The guitarist turned up at a show at London’s old Marquee Club and afterwards invited Ian to join Rainbow.

“We had a few drinks and it was very friendly. Ritchie said: ‘You should be in my band.’ I said: ‘No thanks; I’m very happy at the moment. Why don’t you join my band?’ He just didn’t get it.”
